In 2008, Copenhagen Municipality initiated targeted technical and cost benefit analyses to get an overview of the city's climate change challenges.
A strategy focusing on people's everyday lives and handling extreme cloudbursts in the city was prepared. The objective was to make the city more resilient to climate change, more liveable and more sustainable.
COWI has assisted the Copenhagen Municipality to prepare and develop a climate adaptation plan focusing on the most important socio-economic threats.
When rain was identified as the largest immediate climate threat to Copenhagen and its citizens, our involvement was extended to include detailed design of specific climate adaption actions at catchment and neighbourhood levels.
We developed a tool that helps prioritise and present climate adaptation efforts according to their socio-economic urgency. The tool has now been integrated into the national guidelines for climate adaptation plans used by all Danish municipalities.
